Tummy Tuck - Abdominoplasty
The ‘Tummy tuck’ also known as abdominoplasty is the actual removal of excess fat and skin from the abdomen. The procedure will also actually flatten the abdominal profile by tightening the underlying muscles. This is a popular procedure in the and has been performed for over 20 years throughout the US. for women who have abdominal bulging, stretch marks or excess fat.
In most cases exercise or diet cannot remove this excess fat and therefore the ‘tummy tuck’ becomes one of the only ways in which it may be removed. The ‘tummy tuck’ is the surgical process by which the separated abdominal muscles can be repaired and the excess skin around the navel can be removed. Once the excess fat is reduced it will result in a slimmer and more youthful midsection.
A common procedure for women who have had children and now feel they need to restore their pre-pregnancy figure is the ‘mommy makeover’. Many women still retain their shape after one or two children but after the third child many women feel as if they have lost their figure forever.
The ‘mommy makeover’ as it has been termed by surgeons throughout the USA is the procedure of choice for many women and may involve a number of procedures that are combined. The procedure can involved rejuvenate breasts through breast augmentation or abdominoplasty also known as a ‘tummy tuck’. Many mothers can attest to the fact that after childbirth their body has undergone some difficult changes that they have trouble coming to their change of body shape.
The ‘Mommy Makeover’ is the way of getting back your pre-pregnancy figure. Here the doctor will give you a number of options to address areas of your body that you would like to restore to their more youthful appearance.
A mommy makeover may be a combination of procedures including liposuction, tummy tuck, breast surgery or breast augmentation. There is no doubt that the effects of pregnancy on a woman's abdomen can become very obvious especially after the second or third pregnancy.
This is due to the fact that uterus and abdominal wall become stretched and will never return to their normal size. Before pregnancy the uterus is usually about the size of an orange. When the mother becomes pregnant and as the baby grows the uterus is stretched. Ultimately this causes the abdominal wall to become stretched also. At the front of the abdomen the abdominal wall is held together by the rectus muscles. This is also known as the six pack although it may not actually look like what we know as a six pack.
The problem with pregnancy is that women are never able to restore their abdomen to the way it was before pregnancy. During childbirth the rectal muscles get pulled apart and actually separate. Unfortunately there is no way to restore this and they have to be surgically sewn back together in order to achieve the patient’s pre-pregnancy figure. There is no muscle in the mother midline therefore this is why they have the ‘pouch effect’. Surgery is the only method of returning the midline to it’s previous shape. Other issues can be the loose skin due to the fact that as the baby grows the skin is stretched also. Once the baby has been delivered the mother is left with stretchmarks and hanging skin.
This is normally due to the fact that the underlying muscle has also being stretched. The effects of pregnancy may be apparent especially in the mother's lower abdomen. It is particularly noticeable when a mother stands up. Others issues that a patient may want to address are the effect on a mother's breasts. Due to hormonal changes in the mother caused by the pregnancy the mother’s breasts will grow. Once the baby is born the mother must feed the baby causing the breasts to be to repeatedly stretched and shrink in size.
Once breastfeeding has been completed the breasts will typically decrease in size often to a size that was smaller than they were during the pregnancy. Once again this can cause issues with loose or sagging skin - the best way to solve this problem is breast augmentation.
Even a single pregnancy can have harsh effects on a mother’s figure and if the mother has additional pregnancies there's even more damage done. Many women who have had little trouble after their first and second child will often find the third child will cause a huge amount of abdominal stretching and also tissue loss once the breastfeeding is finished. Some of these problem areas may have been evident after the first or second child but now will become even more evident after the third child.
It is the combination of these problems that we look to address with the ‘mommy makeover’.
Many women have experienced these issues with drooping breasts, tissue loss and stretching of the abdominal wall where their skin and muscle are not as taut as they were before. It is the removal and sculpting of these local collections of fat led that has led the procedure to be known as a ‘mommy makeover’. Dr Shahine combines a number of procedures into this one single procedure known as the ‘Mommy Makeover’ and has been producing outstanding results for years.
Treatment of the abdomen
The abdomen would normally require an abdominoplasty which also known as a ‘tummy tuck’ procedure. This will allow the mother to tighten the abdominal muscles and will also allow the skin to be tightened in the lower abdomen. The ‘tummy tuck’ is a common procedure in the US today. The procedure will leave a scar running along the lower abdomen but this can be hidden below the swim suit or can be performed below the bikini line. If the patient has excess fat or loose skin then the skin can be reduced by making an incision. If there is excess fat in the abdomen then this could be addressed using liposuction.
Treatment of the breast
For the treatment of a sagging or drooping breasts there are several options depending on how much tissue has been lost and how much skin there is on the mothers breast. If the mother has mild drooping of the breasts then these can be improved using breast implants. If the mother’s nipple is too low then the skin and breast tissue can be reshaped. It may be possible to increase the breast in size by using breast implants. It is important that patients are realistic about the amount of improvement that can be made. In some instances it can sometimes take a few months following surgery in order to see the results that they are looking for with breast augmentation. This is often the case where there has been an extensive droopiness before the surgery.
Liposuction and fat removal
The ‘Mommy Makeover’ can also include liposuction in other problem areas of the body that harbor areas of localized fat. This can be done to reduce areas of hard to move fat that cannot be moved otherwise either through dieting or exercise. When liposuction is performed it is the permanent removal of localized fat and this can be performed at the same time as a tummy tuck. Liposuction can be performed on other areas besides the abdomen and hips, including inner and outer thighs.
In order to have a ‘mommy makeover’ you will probably be combining a few procedures that you will first discuss with Dr Shahine. It is important first to discuss the extent of what is realistic and what is achievable. At your consultation with Dr. Shahine you will sit down to discuss these procedures and Dr Shahine will attempt to understand your goals and explain what would be a realistic expectation. He will discuss your options and will come up with an overall price for the surgical procedure. It may be possible to do some of the procedures in parts or at different intervals, however combining these procedures at the same time may reduce the cost of the overall ‘mommy makeover’ procedure.
‘Mommy makeovers’ can be performed for the following breast procedures:
- breast lift
- Breast reduction.
- Breast augmentation
- Breast revision
For body procedures:
- Alternatives to liposuction
- Scars and stretch marks
